A jewel hard to find

/A jewel hard to find

My first encounter with this bird was in a very unlikely place. It was a park near my grandmother’s place in Kiev. It was a forested area distinguished by a cascade of lakes and streams with high banks connecting them.

One day we were having a walk along a stream. Suddenly a bird flushed up from the stream, and as it went flying down the current its wings and back flashed bright blue in the rays of sunlight coming through the trees. My little blue parrot escaped just a week ago and my first thought was that it is him. I have never seen such a bright bird in the open.

Later we found out in a book that it was a kingfisher. These beautiful birds are quite secretive and cannot be seen often. The more happy I was to see it again twenty years later in Switzerland.
